Looking for things to do in Birmingham, Alabama? There are a bunch of great places hosting a wide range of entertainment, probably right down the street from your Birmingham apartment. The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex — or the BJCC, as it’s commonly called — is one of the biggest and most versatile venues.
The BJCC boasts a whopping 360,000 square feet of usable space. For public events, the BJCC is divided into 4 indoor areas: the Legacy Arena, the Concert Hall, the Exhibition Hall and the Magic City Theater. For corporate events, there is the Forum Building, Theater and more than ninety meeting rooms.
In the mood for a stage performance, like a play or a musical? The BJCC has you covered. Performances usually take place in the Concert Hall. Whether you’re looking for something classic or modern, you can find it here. Take in performances of Broadway in Birmingham’s The King and I (December 21rst – 23rd, 2018), Marvel Universe LIVE! Age of Heroes (February 7th – 10th, 2019), the Alabama Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty (March 8th – 10th, 2019) and many more.
Music is a huge part of life and Birmingham celebrates that. The BJCC hosts a number of musical acts, from individual artists to bands to orchestras. They’re normally held in the Legacy Arena. Check out Harry Connick, Jr. (December 5th, 2018), Elton John (December 4th 2018), the Trans-Siberian Symphony Orchestra (December 9th, 2018), Metallica (January 22nd, 2019) and more in concert. There’s also the Dancing With the Stars: Live! Dance All Night Tour (December 29th, 2018) coming up as well as the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s Video Games Live! (February 8th, 2019).
So the BJCC hosts stage performances and concerts, but what about sports? Well, they’ve got that too! The Mike Slive Invitational: Auburn vs UAB Basketball (December 15th, 2018) is coming up soon. So is Monster Jam (January 5th and 6th, 2019) and Elevate the Stage (March 8th – 10th, 2019), a gymnastics competition. Later on in the year, they’ll have other events as various sports seasons get under way.
Looking for something more interactive? Check out the many exhibitions and displays that are coming up throughout the year. Stroll through The Pink Bride Wedding Show (January 20th, 2019), one of Alabama’s largest bridal shows. If you prefer engines, stop by the Birmingham Boat Show (January 24th – 27th 2019) or the World of Wheels Custom Auto Show (February 8th – 10th, 2019). DIY is more your thing? Have a look around the Birmingham Home Show (February 15th – 17th, 2019).
Whatever your interests are, you’re sure to find something at the BJCC that will suit you. Maybe you’ll find several things! Check out the full list of events and see what strikes you.
