Irondale Cafe was first opened as a hot dog stand in 1928 by Emmett Montgomery. Flash forward a few decades. and it has a new owner but the same delicious food. The menu has largely stayed the same and it offers fan favorites like, buttermilk fried chicken, fried okra and cornbread with giblet gravy. And as a favorite of author Fannie Flagg, you might know it inspired a little movie called “Friend Green Tomatoes” which are also on the menu.

Who doesn’t like a good deal that goes to a good cause? Lovelady Thrift Store not only sells second-hand clothes. It also provides a large portion of the funding for the Lovelady Center. The Lovelady Center helps women by offering medical services, counseling services, addiction counseling services, life-skills training, parenting classes, job training, job placement, childcare, nutrition, housing and post-secondary education. Being thrifty has its benefits.

One of Birmingham’s best kept secrets is Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve. Most people don’t realize that just outside the hustle and bustle of Birmingham sits a picturesque nature preserve. Ruffner Mountain is the perfect place for a hike on the 14 miles of trail or plan an educational trip to learn about the rich history of the grassroots movement that fought to protect Ruffner Mountain.
