Think St. Patrick’s Day in Birmingham merely means wearing green? Blarney! Here in Birmingham, we’re lucky to have a ton of ways to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day. Follow the rainbow this March and you’ll find these Birmingham St. Patrick’s Day events are solid gold.
Five Points Irish Flag Raising
Thursday, March 15th, 5:30 PM – 6:00 PM
Price: Free, except for your drink!
The Irish Flag Raising happens a few days before St. Patrick’s Day (Thursday, to be exact). But it’s never too early to bring in the Irish cheer. The event begins when the Irish flag rises to the top of the Chick-fil-A flagpole in Five Points South. Then, the Birmingham Irish Cultural Society announces their choice for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Marshall. After a blessing and a bagpipe performance, it’s time to process to Brennan’s Irish Pub for the second celebration on our list.
The Great Birmingham Irish Toast
Thursday, March 15th, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
Price: Free, except for drinks (and dinner, if you decide to stay!)
With the Irish flag flying, the Birmingham Irish Cultural Society leads a procession to Brennan’s Irish Pub. If you loved Buck Mulligan’s Public House (and really, who didn’t?), you’ll love owner Danny Winter’s new venture, Brennan’s. Participants will have time to buy a pint and a shot before raising their glasses to the Emerald Isle. After the toast, stick around to finish your Guinness with your new friends. Actually, you’ll probably want to stick around for dinner, too. Brennan’s menu features Irish classics like fish and chips, white pudding, cottage pie, and bangers and champ.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Saturday March 17th, 1:30pm to 2:30pm
The 34th Annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Five Points South is a treat for the whole family. Led by a traditional bagpipe band, the parade loops through the historic Five Points junction. While there will obviously be drink specials for those old enough, Chick-fil-A will provide a Lucky Zone for kids. Come early for lunch or stay late for dinner – you’re sure to have a whale of a time!
Tour de Brewers XII
Saturday March 17th, 11:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Price: $43, this price includes 5 craft beers!
Bring your bike and appetite for beer to this event! Tour de Brewers XII is a 11k informal charity fun run and ride. This event supports The Dannon Project, which works to change the lives of men and women who are nonviolent previous offenders. Come enjoy the crowd, give to charity and sip some local brews.
It wouldn’t be St. Patrick’s Day without a few alcoholic beverages. Several bars and breweries will have specials going on all night. Start your celebration at Nana Funks‘ St. Patty’s Day Party, then make your way to enjoy Tin Roof and other bars in the area.
Whichever event your choose, be responsible! Make sure to have a designated driver, Uber or Lyft ready to transport you safely.
